Thunder cracked as he ran through slippery streets, in a city whose name he didn't know. The city and its streets were his whole world, he knew of nothing else. He'd lived on the streets since he was smaller, he only remembers yelling voices and a dim set of rooms before. He doesn't remember why he left, or even what his name was. He calls himself Eins, a word he likes the sound of when some of the vendors use it. One of them told him that it meant one, and he thinks that's perfect, there's only one of him.
He'd been beaten up and driven out of his favorite spot that day, a spot in a nice park. A group of older teens had come there to drink and party; Eins told them to go away, and they didn't care for that. He was a good fighter, and fast, but there were more of them and they were bigger. So now he'd been forced to flee, it was raining and he'd have to sleep in the alleys. Sulkily, Eins chose a boarded up doorway to shelter from the rain, and slumped down. He rubbed his jaw
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
